Over the years surfing has bloomed into a worldwide sport with an ever evolving trend towards the mainstream. With the labels and the money and the constant promotion of high performance, sometimes the ‘soul’ of surfing gets lost beneath the commerce.

Professional surfing has emerged so far forward into the future that a lot of the natural beauty associated with the simple act of riding a surging wall of water has been replaced with fast snaps and flicks and tricks.

Quiksilver ambassador and Australia’s smiling queen of female surfing Steph Gilmore has achieved more in her short life in surfing than many of us could ever dream. Up there with some of the best male surfers Steph can throw spray sky high or sit deep in a pitching tube, but what draws me to her surfing is how she can make shortboarding on a thruster look simply beautiful.

Coining surfing as a dance is not something new, but perhaps has been overlooked in the current world of high performance surfing. This series of short films featuring Steph traveling through New York to meet three talented dancers relates surfing with that natural groove between the body and the wave.

A beautiful set of three films, thank you Steph for reminding high performance surfing that the dance is still very much alive.

Enjoy!
